“This is an historic achievement.
In 30 years I have not come across a workshop like this – where actors of all backgrounds have had two weeks to just look at the classics – let’ s have more of this.”
(Jatinder Verma, Artistic Director, Tara Arts)
In Winter 2009, Custom/Practice in collaboration with the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Continuing Artist Development Programme and supported by Talawa Theatre Company and English Touring Theatre launched a series of professional development workshops for actors of all backgrounds looking to expand and consolidate their skills in the field of classical text. Offering free or low-cost ongoing professional development to participants, the project aims to nurture talent through collaboration with some of the country’ s leading practitioners. We believe that in a tough, isolating industry, actors need to be offered a safe space in which to continue to practice and refine their craft.
We only learn by doing, and we believe our workshop programme offers a structured, convenient and friendly environment for that growth.

To date we have met and worked with over 200 actors from all social, ethnic and training backgrounds.
The opportunity to participate in a Custom/Practice workshop is usually offered on the basis of a meeting. We occasionally make our decisions based on CVs and personal statements but we are ultimately looking for actors who we know we can help grow and who we hope to go on a journey with through our other projects and productions.
